HISA NSW – Innovations in precision medicine (and end of year drinks!)

The HISA NSW committee would like to invite you to an event on precision medicine, followed by end of year drinks to celebrate the successes and achievements of the past year.

Innovations in precision medicine

The trend towards personalised or precision medicine adds significant pressure on the clinical decision process, requiring greater diagnostic precision and appropriate selection of targeted therapies.  This session will illustrate how innovations in cloud-based platforms such as AWS, data integration and the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence can help researchers cope with analysing the burgeoning genomic data required for diagnosis. These technologies have the potential to help better sub-classify and diagnose disease, while also breaking down data barriers to provide clinicians with timely access to the information required to deliver targeted clinical care.

Speakers:

Denis Bauer
Transformational Bioinformatics Team, CSIRO

Cloud computing and artificial intelligence transforms health research

Dr Denis Bauer is an internationally recognised expert in machine learning, specifically in processing big genomic data to help unlock the secrets in human DNA. Her achievements include developing an open-source, artificial intelligence-based search engine that helps researchers pinpoint the exact genes they need to study or edit to cure disease.

Her talk showcases how to find disease genes responsible for FTD/ALS using VariantSpark and a novel cloud-based architecture to build a decision support framework that empowers clinicians to find actionable genomic insights and process medical records at a speed fit for point-of-care application. This talk also outlines how we use a serverless architecture to translate these insights onto the clinical practice and concludes by touching on how to evolve serverless architecture more efficiently through a hypothesis-driven approach.

Craig Szucs
Sales Director, Orion Health

Breaking the silos: How open data platforms can democratise data to support health analytics and app ecosystems

Craig has spent nearly 15 years in the health sector wearing various hats but passionately pursuing the same question - how do we leverage technology to create a better, safer health system and a connected seamless experience for patients? Craig is Sales Director for Orion Health and works with clients to address data integration, eHealth system and integrated care challenges.

His talk focuses on the challenges of healthcare becoming a data driven endeavour when currently data is locked in various silos, proprietary systems and subject to competing and often incompatible data structures and terminologies. He presents solutions such as Orion Health’s Amadeus precision medicine platform seeks to break through these barriers to provide truly democratised access to the wealth of data that health services maintain.

Following the presentation, the HISA NSW committee will host end of year drinks and encourages you to stay and catch up with your colleagues and fellow HISA NSW members.
