Health data interoperability and linkage

Health data is increasingly being shared as it plays a vital role in advancing medical knowledge and improving clinical outcome. The benefits of sharing health data for clinicians, researchers and institutions are numerous and lead to efficient evidence-based medicine and improved decision making. The challenge when comparing results from different data sets, aside from the privacy and security considerations is to ensure that we are comparing equivalent data from different sets.


Numerous standards have been proposed, over the years, to normalise, standardise and provide a unified communication model for the data. At the end of this workshop, you will have gained some insight into:
- what is the Fast Healthcare Interoperable Resources (FHIR) framework?
- what are the various terminologies used to standardise and normalise the data?
- what infrastructures currently exist in Australia to assist you in standardising your data?
- a few “technology in action” case studies showcasing the terminologies, frameworks and infrastructures.

You will hear from researchers, software engineers and company founders about their experiences and insights on how best to model and link your data to facilitate interoperability of health data. As this is an interactive session, you are encouraged to interact with and ask questions of the speakers during and after their presentation.

This seminar will be of interest to:
- health informaticians who want to share and link their data more effectively
- digital health researchers who want to share and link their data more effectively
- data managers and information officers
- healthcare researchers and research support staff
- technologists who want to stay at the forefront of emerging technologies.

Dr Michael Lawley Senior Principal Research Scientist and Group Leader, Australian e-Health Research Centre, CSIRO, part of the Health & Biosecurity Flagship

Michael leads the Health Informatics Group with teams working on Health Data Semantics, Health Statistics, as well as a Software Engineering team. He has deep expertise in Clinical Terminology and specifically large scale ontologies such as SNOMED CT. Technology developed my Michael and his team has been licensed nationally and internationally by standards bodies, government organisations and SMEs. His group’s Clinical Terminology has a specific focus on SNOMED CT. This research has resulted in novel applications to deal with the issues of accessing and analysing patient data from multiple data sources. Most notable among these are Ontoserver and Snapper. These are being deployed by NEHTA as the terminology server and authoring tool for the National Clinical Terminology Service (NCTS).

David O’Driscoll General Manager (Acting), Design & Development Authority Branch, Australian Digital Health Agency

His broad experience has allowed him to better provide outcomes for his employers and clients by combining specialist skills in areas such as data and software design with more diverse skills including marketing of software. He has had the opportunity to work with organisations ranging from small software development houses to some of Australia’s largest construction and mixed resource companies, as well as state and federal government departments. While their size has been diverse, all these organisations had one common need: IT systems that integrated with their business processes to provide meaningful business outcomes. In recent years, David has focused largely on the information architecture aspects of IT. He believes there is a growing understanding that if we don’t understand and manage the underlying information assets of the enterprise, then we will struggle to deliver quality information services to our customers. His technical background supports his broad business management skills, allowing him to support organisational goals through the careful management of technology projects.

Brett Esler Principal Consultant, Oridashi

Brett Esler is the principal consultant and founder of Oridashi. Applied healthcare informatics enhances appropriate shared health record information usage. Use of health informatics standards can streamline the connectivity of systems and establish ongoing architectural patterns that enable ongoing improvement of stability and capability of enterprises. As part of the Oridashi service and product offerings Brett offers pragmatic solutions to information system integration at planning, design and implementation levels. The Oridashi-Hiasobi product brings HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability) capability and the SMART on FHIR platform to the general practice setting. HL7 FHIR with Australian localisation profiles offer common API support for application developers, and with the SMART on FHIR profile, a suitable methodology for managing access authorisation.
